This is a great player. The flip screen is very handy. You can use it like a tablet model to hang it in the car case or flip it and use it on a table top. It has a very good picture. Touch controls on the front are very easy to use and can be locked if you don't want the kids to mess with it. I do wish it had a glass screen because it would be easier to clean but it would also make it heavier.

Technically this is a very nice DVD player. The only problem is that the controls are impossible to operate in the dark -- such as in my daughter's bedroom at night, or in the back of a car. Instead of buttons, the player has touchpads. So it is very easy to hit the wrong button. Right next to the up/down/left/right key there is a touchpad that cuts off half the screen so you can enter "LCD mode," whatever that is. You are guaranteed to hit that touchpad while you're trying to select a scene.

High Definition Region Free DVD Players

The difference between an ordinary and high definition DVD player

It is not only the fact that a high definition DVD player provides us with the combination of very high quality audio and video. It also provides us with the ability to play the latest DVDs from any region of the world. A costly and good quality DVD player that is not region free or high definition can also provide quality audio and video. But the performance of such equipment is restricted in the sense that it can only play DVDs from that particular region, with that region standard built-in. The standard video resolution can be at best 480 visible lines of details. On the other hand a high definition DVD player enables you to view 1080 visible lines providing a greater detail of a picture or image. When it is a region free DVD player, it can play any DVD from any part of the world, with precision, on your TV, that might not be originally compatible with the standard of the DVD. Therefore, the differences are, that an ordinary DVD player will allow you visualise up-to 480 lines while a high definition, with its 1080 lines, provides a better picture clarity. The High definition DVD player also comes in two categories; one is of 720 pixels while the other is of 1080 pixels. Thus resolution and quality wise, there is quite a big difference between an ordinary DVD player and a high definition DVD player.

The High definition region free DVD player

Now we come to the object of our study, the high definition region free DVD player. After having a brief overview of the ordinary and high definition DVD player and their basic differences, we now move on to the term 'region free'. A region free DVD player is one that can play DVD of any standard to be viewed on your TV without going for the compatibility equipments. DVDs cannot be played on all players. Different regions in the world use different standards for a DVD, like PAL, NSTC, and SECAM, as used in Asia, Europe and North America, except that France with few of its neighbouring countries, use SECAM. Generally, three standards are followed all over the world in case of DVDs. These are PAL standard, that are used in most part of Asia, Europe and Africa; the NSTC standard used in North America and major part of United States; and SECAM standard, followed in France and few other European countries and Middle East. The problem with these standards is that they are not compatible to each other. As a result, a DVD procured from Europe or Asia, is not compatible with your NSTC compatible TVs used in America. Similarly, the NSTC compatible DVDs from the United States cannot be played in most part of Europe and Asia since they use PAL compatible TVs. The same principle is applied to playing SECAM, the oldest of the standards, on non-compatible TVs elsewhere. A region free DVD player solves these problems by allowing you to view DVD with any standard on any type of TV with its inbuilt system of conversion to compatible standards.

Zune Digital Player: What Will play - and Won't Play

There's a lot of misinformation on the web about what will and will not play on your Zune.

A recent poster in our forums summed up the confusion: "I am hoping you can answer a question for me. I have about 10 GB of music on my hard drive, over half of which I have purchased through music services such as MusicMatch and MSN. I really want to purchase a zune, but I am concerned this player won't play the music I have already purchased from reading some posts, blogs and news. Will it play my music I already have...or is all the music I have out the window? Please clear up this concern for me...I have not been able to find any answers anywhere......"

Let's give a clear answer to that question. We'll be as definitive as we can be from the information available.

In your collection, your music most likely comes from one of the four sources below. Here's what we know for each:

Music bought from iTunes Store...

...cannot be played on Zune (or on any other digital player except for iPod). This is because Apple applies its "FairPlay" digital rights management restrictions on files purchased through iTunes Store.

Music bought or otherwise acquired from sources that do not apply DRM or copy protection...

...are playable on Zune. Examples: songs ripped from CDs; illegally downloaded songs.

Music bought from Zune Marketplace...

...can play on your Zune (naturally). And, cannot be played on non-Zune players.

Music bought from sources that apply DRM protection, but do not restrict the playing of songs to particular players (eg MSN Music and other online stores)...

...does NOT appear to be playable on Zune.

We found the last point hard to believe for a long time. But it now seems clear that Zune players are made to be compatible with Zune services (eg Marketplace) only, and not music purchased elsewhere.

We draw this conclusion partly from a recent enGadget's interview with J. Allard, and from our email interactions with Zune insiders and Microsoft bloggers. In the interview, Allard indicates that "you get a Zune device, you hook it up to the Zune service, and it just works", and his other statements indicate that music purchased through PlaysForSure sources won't play on Zune.

In that regard, then, the Zune system is just as restrictive as iPod/iTunes is.

What does this mean for you? Part of that answer depends on the make-up of your current music library.

For people with large music collections of protected downloaded music, you're not going to be able to play that music on your Zune - at least without some awkward workarounds. This may affect your decision about whether to go Zune or not.

For people who don't have large purchased collections, or who are comfortable with a ZunePass subscription, the decision to go Zune is easier.

And for people who are against closed music systems in general... then neither Zune nor iPod is right for you. Stay on the sidelines and stick with PlaysForSure and other more open systems.

As for me, I'm going with a ZunePass subscription. For a monthly price of an album-and-a-half, I'll have my pick from millions of songs. I'll be swapping songs and albums in and out of my playlists without restriction.

What's the Difference Between DVD Upscaling and Blu-Ray?

With the arrival and popularity of high definition TV sets over the recent decade, there have been many developments made to players trying to fit and utilize the high resolution which HDTV offers. One of these developments was the 'upscaling' capabilities of the standard DVD player, which allowed the DVD player to perform much better with HDTV and produce a superior quality picture.

But now that Blu-ray players are on the scene, how efficient are these 'upscaling' DVD players? Some may get confused as to what to purchase and which device is best? What is the difference between the upscaling of standard DVD and Blu-ray?

The answer all comes down to resolution output.

The everyday, standard DVD player that you can find in most homes has an output video resolution at 480i(720x480), this is without upscaling of course. A progressive scan DVD player can produce an output video resolution of 480p (720x480).

Most HDTV have the capability to display video resolution up to 720p (1280x720) - 1080p (1920x1080). (Remember 1080p is the highest video resolution.) So you can clearly see that just using a standard DVD player you will not get the full benefit of your High Definition TV. * 1080p: 1,920 pixels per line which has 1,080 horizontal lines - displayed progressively. Progressive Scanning - each line displayed following another. (1080p High Definition TV/ Blu-ray Disc)

This is our fourth DVD player and so far the best one. 7" Coby and 7" Dynex died and 8" Philips had a surprisingly low resolution and thus quite a grainy picture and except for testing, I never used its iPhone dock (this Visteon player doesn't have it and I really don't need it) so we gave it to my mother in law. I did read a lot of reviews for Sony, Panasonic and other brand name units, went to some brick and mortar stores to see them, and all of them either had some flaws that were show stoppers or were too expensive. I finally decided to risk it with Visteon XV101 because of its big screen and fine resolution at a very affordable price. I was a bit skeptical because I didn't know anything about this brand but after going through about two months of (ab)use from our soon to be four year old daughter, it definitely looks like a well designed and solid piece of engineering with good commands and good picture with fine screen resolution. She learned how to operate it on her own, so she's either a genius or the menus are intuitive enough. I worried most about the volume levels, but its speakers are loud and it works well in our Honda Odyssey with noticeable levels of road and wind noise at and above 70 Miles per hour. At home I have to often ask my daughter to lower the volume because she tends to turn it all the way up and it seems like it goes to 11. I guess that's good for her (I wonder what I was thinking).

Cons: A cumbersome latch needs both hands to open the screen to its viewing position and it might be better when this unit is mounted upside down in a dock (not included) on the car ceiling. The battery life is not too impressive, I believe they rated it at 3 hours, so it's good for one long or two short movies but that doesn't bother me because it's usually plugged in when being used, either in the car or at home.

All in all, this is a very good DVD player with a lot of features, good remote and user interface and it beats many big brand name units and does more than just a good job.

I bought this DVD player from Amazon.co, LLC in Dec. of '09 for my son for christmas. The looks of the movies playing (Transformers 1 and 2 most of the time :)) were much better than I expected. It's easy for my son to put the movies in himself and play/pause/stop them. One time I went in his room while he was watching it to see him banging a bakugan ball on the actual cover where the DVD goes. The player has no damage and the movie didn't skip at all.
