A Phillips Portable DVD Player Review

I borrowed my amigo's Phillips portable DVD player the other day and I was moderately impressed. It was a model pet824 with an 8.5 inch screen. On the whole, I liked the device quite a bit although it wasn't the greatest portable DVD player I've used.

While the external case was made out of that semi-soft, malleable type of plastic, the machine is sturdily put together. It feels as if it can tolerate pretty hard treatment and still keep on working.

Not having owned or used a Philips portable DVD player before, I was curious to see what they have to offer. With my interest sufficiently stimulated, I began investigating an assortment of other models more closely. Philips occupies the middle of the portable DVD player price range with a number of models, all of reasonable quality. While the quality is good, there are cheaper players available from other manufacturers that offer similar quality.

There is a uniform appearance to all the Philips players. For whatever reason, Philips design declaration is one of shiny plastic with rounded edges on the outside. Philips portables are also a little thicker and heavier than many others of the same screen size. The controls on the units were perfectly situated, simple to comprehend and uncomplicated to operate.

Most importantly, I found the picture quality to be quite good across the complete group. Philips promotes a feature called their "bright dot policy", which is supposed to enforce a strict intolerance of any LCD defects called bright dots. Who knows how much of that is promotional propaganda, but they definitely produce a great LCD that generates near perfect picture quality.

I was surprised to learn that every Philips model was able to process a myriad of file formats. Above and beyond DVD movies, you can play music, view photos, play Mpeg4 and DVD+ just to name a few. The majority of models only have 1 headphone jack, which is kind of weak at these prices, but if you can overlook that the sound quality is in fact quite respectable. Of course, the external speakers allow for only mediocre sound quality on all but the very best and most costly portable DVD players. Philips is no exception in this regard, but a moderately good set of ear-buds or headphones improves the sound quality greatly.

Depending on model, you can anticipate between 4 and 6 hours of battery life, which is pretty darn good by comparison. However, this battery performance does come at a price because the Philips batteries are rather large and heavy when stacked up alongside competing units.
